FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: We have an observatory?
A: We do! TCNJ’s Observatory is composed of two telescopes. Our 11″ telescope is open to the public, and our larger 27″ telescope is reserved for research and our upper-level astrophysics courses.

Q: How do I get to the observatory?
A: Follow our instructions on the directions page!

Q: When is the observatory open?
A: See our hours page!

Q: What should I bring?
A: If it is cold bring a heavy jacket, you’ll be outside for a while. If you are in an astronomy class you should bring an observation sheet and a pencil. Since it is dark while the telescope is on, a red light will be provided for writing.

Q: What do I have to do?
A: If you are in an astronomy class, an observatory tech will assist you by showing you various objects in the sky, which you will record on your observation sheet. You must get the sheet signed by a technician to get credit, and our technicians cannot sign half-filled sheets. Lost your observation sheet? Print another copy with this PDF. If you are not in an astronomy class and just visiting for fun, let our technicians know! They will be happy to show you various objects. Feel free to make specific requests. Our technicians will do their best, but please note that they can only show objects that are visible at that time.

Q: Who is that random man with a telescope on campus?
A: That’s Jeff Pinyon! He is a local member of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Princeton and often sets up his 150mm reflector around Campus Town for everyone to enjoy. He aims to announce when he plans on observing via Instagram: @NightSkyJeff
